No. A phone or tablet that can scan a QR code makes activation faster, but it's optional — you can type your 8-character activation code directly on the touchscreen instead. After setup, the device is fully standalone and never needs a phone again.

Absolutely — it's made for gifting. The recipient plugs it in, connects to their WiFi, and enters the activation code from the card in the box. No technical knowledge required. The dark/gold packaging makes a great unboxing experience.

Wait times come from Queue-Times.com, which refreshes them about every 5 minutes — as fast as the parks publish them. The display checks for fresh data every 30 seconds, and the “synced” line in the bottom-right corner shows when it last did. A few minutes’ difference from the official park app is normal.

Park Lantern keeps showing the last wait times it received, and the status line at the bottom changes to “not connected”. It reconnects automatically when WiFi returns. No data is lost.

Yes. The screensaver is off out of the box, so the display keeps showing your parks. To use one, go to Settings → Display → Screensaver, choose when it starts (after 10 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour without a touch), and pick a style: Breathing (pulsing gold castle), Drifting (a castle that slowly moves around the screen), Countdown (days until your trip) or Trip (your trip's name and the days left, big enough to read across the room). A touch brings the parks back.

No. Park Lantern looks after the screen for you: the whole picture shifts 1–2 pixels every 30 minutes, too little to notice, so nothing sits in one spot for hours, and the app refreshes itself every night at 3 AM. Both are always on, so there's nothing to set.

No. The display connects over 2.4 GHz WiFi, which reaches further through walls and is plenty for park data. Most home routers broadcast 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under the same network name, so there's nothing to do. If yours is 5 GHz only (some mesh systems are), turn on 2.4 GHz in the router's settings first.
